The Jewish New Year begins at sundown tonight. Tomorrow is Michaelmas Day. I wrote last year (September 3) how this season brings to mind our 30 years in North London, our Jewish friends and neighbours, and the quiet streets in the autumn sun. Over the years I have associated the golden September light with the Jewish festival – for, in my memory, the weather was always fine for it. The overlap this year of its first full day with the Feast of St Michael and All Angels is a happy coincidence. And the weather is lovelier than I can remember it. And Mrs Llew’s Michaelmas daisies are doing well. Whatever our faith, this is a season of new beginnings in many ways. Happy New Year to everyone.
